Daytrip to Washington DC

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

First things first…please forgive me for being absent from blogworld for a few days.  I had a busy (and, fun!) weekend, and then, this week has had me "busy as a bee", too!  So, rather than putting lots of things in one post I decided I would just do a little "backtracking" and catch you up on things.

On Saturday we decided it was just way too nice outside to stay indoors so we bundled up (yep! it was chilly!!) and headed to DC.  I must say I am still mesmerized by the beauty that is found there.  When I used to drive John to Union Station every other weekend at 4:30 in the morning (way too early for this sista!!) I loved catching a glimpse of the Washington Monument as we crossed the bridge.  It is simply beautiful, and the city is filled with so much history, amazing restaurants, interesting shops, and something to check out around each corner.  Not to mention…the Capitol is always a beautiful site to see in all its glory!

Since it was around lunchtime, we decided to walk over to Chinatown.  Now, if you are looking for good Chinese or Thai food…this is the place for you!  We love Thai food so we were on the lookout for a good spot!

There are so many restaurants and little eateries to choose from so we strolled around a bit trying to find a restaurant to try.  You know you are in Chinatown once you see the "Friendship Arch" (a traditional Chinese gate which is said to be the world's largest single-span Chinese arch).

On the way to the Thai restaurant we passed by the "noodle man".  I couldn't resist taking his picture!  You can't get much more "authentic" than this!  However, he didn't appear to be very happy about me taking his picture…or, maybe it's just the fact that by now he's rather used to it.

And, then, maybe just one more shot before we stroll on.  Although we did not try these noodles, I have heard that they are the BEST!  So, I guess we'll just have to stop and try some next time we are in Chinatown!

After lunch we headed towards the Capitol just to walk around a bit.  Even though it was a chilly day, there were tons of people out enjoying the National Mall.  There were guys out playing rugby while others were playing a game of Ultimate Frisbee…looks like I'm not the only one feeling a bit of "spring fever"!

I love going anywhere with my "sweet baboo"! (Yes, that's what I call John sometimes, and nope, he doesn't mind at all!!…Ok, well, at least he didn't before I announced it on my blog!! teeheehee  No, he won't mind…he's good like that!!)  When he was going to Wharton we would often laugh about how we really had seen more of the DC area when we visited here while we were living in Kuwait.  He had a conference to attend in Philadelphia and DC so we worked it in with a little vacation time.  Sometimes when you live close to things like this you often don't take the time to really enjoy it all.  And, honestly, when he was in school and working…well, there just wasn't any time for strolling around!  So, we try to make time to enjoy tooling around Old Town, checking out new things in DC, and just enjoy all the beauty that is part of this area in which we live.  I hope you are trying to make time for some little things like this, too.  There are so many spots to explore and enjoy, and if you look you might just be surprised at all the interesting areas that might just be around the corner from you!

And, while you're out, you might just see some things that are a little out of the ordinary!!  I am so proud to be an American, and I think it is safe to say these people are, too!

As we were walking around the Capitol, I looked up to see this beautiful view through the trees.  I definitely wanted to share this one with you!  I just love how it looks as though you are looking through a secret window to find something so majestic, so stunning, so beautiful.  And, most of all, when I look at this, I just see such GLORY!  And, with the flag waving…it just reminds me that we do live in a beautiful place, and we do have so many blessings here.  Yes, things are difficult right now in our country, but we do still have so many blessings to be thankful for.

Here's hoping that you are seeing blessings today!
